Fall is solidly upon us and though I have lived here for over two decades I'm still delightfully surprised each year at just how pretty this town is when our many trees stars flashing their amazing fall colors. Zimmerman Field

16 year old Alex Coy is the son of our office manager, Lily and the sister of our I.T. person Katrina. Here he is pitchin' up a storm at what we've come to know as Zimmerman Field.

We were very proud of Alex who didn't allow a single run for the four innings that he was on the mound.

I'm pretty sure that it was the Zimmerman Roofing banner behind him that inspired his performance.

Wild Turkey in our yard

Yes Sir, we started Good Friday with wild turkey in our yard. No, we didn't crack the lid on our grandfather's whiskey. We had a real live wild turkey wandering around in our yard amidst the tile and forklifts. We managed to snap a few photos as he headed to the most remote corner of the yard and then he hopped the fence and continued on his way.
Our office is next to a freeway, a lightrail track and the busy Stockton Blvd. so this was an unexpected surprise.

Okay, so President's Day is not our most exciting holiday. If it does stir up your interest in our two most loved Presidents I have a few books to recommend. 1776 by David McCullough does a beautiful job of detailing Washington's most amazing 12 months getting started in what would seem to be an un-winnable war. Of course, you can't stop at the the end of 1776. This book ended up drawing me into Liberty, and excellent college textbook on the American Revolution.

Thankful

My family is loud.
I can't complain, I'm one of the loudest members, but when we get the whole clan together for a few hours it can be overwhelming.
Add enough food to feed an army, even before the desserts make their appearance, and Thanksgiving becomes a day that really requires three additional days off to recover before I'm ready to return to work.
It was a great time, and here I am having survived the skateboarding nephews, the two many chefs in the kitchen and the Uncle that has to try and squeeze a year's worth of catching up into one too brief visit before racing back to his home in Las Vegas.
Or did I dream it all?

Halloween is past and we're almost to Thanksgiving. It's that time a year when the office starts filling up with sweets. I make my resolutions and break them before New Years Eve. I resolve not to have cookies for breakfast, candy for lunch and cake for dinner.

This may be the prettiest time of the year for downtown. My advice; get in as many walks as you can while the fall leaves are making a beautiful mess of everything.

Fall comes in and I just don't want to be indoors. Let me out to enjoy the cooling air, still warm enough that my jacket ends up hanging on my arm, coffee tastes better than at any other time and so it here it is, Thursday and I'm just now getting around to this week's blogging. So far this week I've jumped at every excuse to be out in the yard, helping a customer find tile, loading up samples, anything to stay out from under the flourescents. A Welcome Rain

Riding my bike to work in the rain yesterday was a treat. Sure, the first rain of the season is always nice, exciting, full of nostalgia, but we had such a mild winter last year that it was especially great to get some of the rain we missed last time around. I hope it keeps coming.

On The Road Again

It's great to be back home. I didn't get a chance to blog last week but I have an excellent excuse. Monday was a holiday and I spent Thursday and Friday driving up to Seattle for The Seattle Sketchfest. Three days of sketch comedy and a beautiful drive to boot. The pacific northwest really is a beautiful place.

Air Conditioning in One Room

I dealt with yesterdays 105 degree weather by hiding in my bedroom with the air conditioning on. It's the only room in my apartment with a/c.

A movie, some snacks that didn't involve cooking and plenty of water had me feeling alright. Two days in a row of it would be a bit much, so I think today I will have to be brave and weed my garden, way overdo, regardless of the heat.

If I start feeling sorry for myself, I can just be glad I'm not up on a roof.

Food is Good!

Last weekend I stumbled across the Buddhist Food Bazarre at the Buddhist Temple on Riverside Blvd. What a great event. Fantastic food, taiko drumming, arts and crafts. I had some sushi and tempura and spent too much money on bonzai trees that I hope I can keep alive. Next time I'll try to let you know in advance about this fun time.

Heat Wave! What Heat Wave?

Here we sit, under the clouds with a cool wind blowing, long sleeve shirts and even sweaters being pulled from the back of the closet, and the rest of the country is baking in the worst heat wave so far this summer. The Best Walk In Town?

Pictured here is an "in progress" shot of a particularly steep roof, quite difficult but; wow, what a good looking house.

Speaking of gorgeous houses, I think the walk down T Street, from 20th to 22nd is my current favorite, especialy at 6:30 am.

The sun is just up, the canopy of trees over the street that our town is famous for is in full effect and the houses are beautiful. The best feature is the little bit of a hill, one of the only hills in our very flat downtown.

On the 3800 block of McKinley Blvd (95816) we're doing an unusual job. We're removing old clay tile, felting the roof, adding vents and then putting the clay back adding Monier concrete where needed to replace broken and cracked tiles.

Some rain would sure be nice after such a dry winter. Just to have one day, sitting inside, drinking tea, reading a good book would be nice. I hear tail of a few drops hitting the sidewalk this morning but I did not experience it personally. I did see the clouds gathering overhead and I remain hopefull that a nice summer rain is on the way. Get dancing.

And we're back to the heatwave. Last year we set the record for the most consecutive days in the triple digits. Let's hope we don't go breakin' that record this year. It's a good time to think about buying a boat. Our crews keep getting roofs done while drinking plenty of water and working in the early hours when its a bit cooler. I don't envy them at all.

Sacramento Folk

Sacramento has a folk scene? I checked out the Sac Music Award's folk showcase on Saturday night and was treated to a great night of music at Marilyns on K Street. All of the bands were great and Marilyns is a nice small venue with a full bar and a good soundsytem. Good times.

And now Monday is here and I'm not sad to be back at work so long as the air conditioning holds out. Our roofers were lined up to fill their water coolers this morning. Staying hydrated in this weather is a must. Here's your list of houses we're currently working on.

Jazz Jubillee?

My fiance and I made our way to the bike trail and passed through the Sacramento Jazz Jubillee to get there. We heard some Zydeco, some blues, some watered down rock and roll but no Jazz? We had a great ride, the American River bike trail really is one of Sacramento's greatest treasures.
On the way home, we once again went through the "Jazz" festival. It was three hours since we'd passed originally. Still no Jazz. I used to go the jubillee every year with my dad, and I didn't mind a little blues and whatever else here and there, but I worry that the Jubillee, in trying to court a new generation of fans is losing it's focus. What's next? Are they going to invite the living members of the Grateful Dead to curate next years event? Ah well, at least nobody is tearing up the bike trail to put in a parking lot.

Fun with the tourists

A couple of out of town friends wanted to see Old Sacramento this weekend. My fiance and I were reluctant to play guide. We live here, we don't go to the tourist traps. But, being good friends, we gave in and we went to old Sacramento... and had a great time!

We had a drink on the top deck of The Delta King, watching the river flow by, shopped for tackiness and kitsch at Evangeline's and then took a nice stroll by the river. Ha, call me a tourist.

Afterwards we made a quick trip to Crepeville on 18th and L Street before sending our guests back to their suburban lair. I'm glad it turned out to be such a pleasant time, but I'm not rushing out to sign up for a tour of The Capitol Building anytime soon. Though the free Sundays at Crocker Art Museum lures us in regularly.

Happy Day After Mother's Day

I hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day. We couldnt' have asked for better weather for it, which has me wondering, do we have one more storm coming before the warm weather grabs on and doesn't let go? I hope so. This winter was TOO mild. Not enough soup and sweater weather for me. But of course it's great to see outdoor concerts come back, to sit outside and have lunch at Tower Cafe and there's a bike trail out there that's beggin' me to go for a longer ride. Free Roof Give Away in progress

We succeeded in giving away a free roof. We found someone who desperately needed a new roof but didn't have the funds to replace theirs and we've started installation of a new composition roof. Thanks to Owens Corning for donating the comp shingles. As we complete the roof I'll be sure to get pictures up here.
It's nice to be able to contribute to our community this way, after all Sacramento has supported our business for 26 years now.

Spring Break

This is the time of year when we can all be thankful that Sacramento is not a Spring Break destination. I once ended up in Cancun Mexico durring Spring Break. Roofing the Night Away

Not able to get to the coast but needing to get away from it all, even if just for a day or two my sweetheart and I decided to take a quick trip to Auburn over the weekend. We stayed at The Powers Mansion Inn and ate at The Monkey Cat restaurant. I'm happy to say that I can highly reccommend both. While we were in town there was an antiques show at the fairgrounds and we walked around Old Auburn which is a perfectly entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

A Roofin' We Will Go

The old world just keeps on spinning and while we say goodbye and adjust to the absences in our daily lives here we keep roofing the houses and taking care of the customers.
Here is the current list of houses we're working on. It's been an especially mild winter so far, but I did hear a surprising forecast this morning, SNOW! Here in Sacramento. I have experienced snow downtown, once. It was almost a decade ago and it was minimal. That would be something to see.

A Sad Weekend

Happy Holidays

I walk to the office here starting out before the sun rises and what a beautiful walk it's been the last couple of days. Sure I might have to wrap my scarf around my ears and bury my gloved hands just as deep in my coat pockets as they'll got to avoid the bite of the cold but it's worth it. It's worth it to see the white frozen white leaves on the ground and the frozen blades of grass all sparkling as the sun comes up. I grab a nice cup of hot coffee at the halfway point and then I arrive to a nice toasty office since the nice ladies in the front office arrive about thirty minutes before me and kick the heat on right away. Well, it's not quite pouring, but the little bit of rain we're getting is kind of nice. We were well prepared for it, so it doesn't make for the headache you might expect.
In other news, the WEBSITE REDESIGN IS DONE! Okay, almost done. We've got the basic site up, now we're putting together galleries showing our work, and showing the process of getting a roof done from tear off to competion.

WIndy Day

Walking through midtown today, making my way toward the office, it wasn't that cold but the wind was whipping things around like crazy. It was actually pretty cool, especially when walking by big palm trees that made me feel like I was in a tropical storm. It may be less exciting for the guys that have to climb on a roof. Today will be one of those where the roofers don't mind all the safety ties and ropes they're required to use.

Okay, folks, I understand you need a roof. I can see why you'd want to do it now, before the rain kicks in, but please, have a heart, I can't be typing in ALL these roofs we're doing EVERY week. Give me a break. My typing muscles hurt just looking at this stack of contracts.

If you simply MUST buy a roof, can you at least put it on a house that sits at a nice short street address; "610 3rd ave" would be nice. No more 123453 North East Rappahantas Trail Blazer Lane Way is a bit much don't you think.

Of course the rest of the company realy appreciates your business. They'd have me thank you and encourage any of you who are thinking of reroofing to go with us. So, thanks, thanks a-lot.

Now this is what you call roofing weather. It's just amazing out there. This probably explains why I missed a week on this blog. The Amazing Weather Continues

Wow, it feels like Fall already. I'm sure the heat is coming back but for now putting on long sleeve shirts in the morning and turning the A/C off is quite a treat. Last week it was a novelty, this unrelenting heat, now it's serious. I'm thinking we move the whole dang town to the arctic. We can learn to reroof igloos. Fresh fish for dinner every night. It doesn't sound too bad.

After a three day weekend of beautiful weather, hanging out at the river, seeing our family and friends, you better believe we couldn't wait to get back to work. You see our guys, they miss the roofs when we're away. They dream of tile, shakes and comp. We have to force them to take a vacation, and even then we often catch them sneaking back onto the job site, wearing fake mustaches and other lame disguises so that they can continue rolling out felt, installing tiles, getting that flashing around the chimney on there just right. With all the folks flooding into town for the Jazz Festival, it's a good thing we're out making Sacramento's roofs look good. I can hear them now, arriving back in Omaha, Boise or Springfield; "Yes, the traditional jazz was good, and plentifull, but that town's roofs are what really impressed me."

Another Day Another Roof

A more accurate title for this post might be Another Day Another Batch of Roofs, as we have tile, shake and concrete roofs going, keeping all of our crews busy.

Tile

We're putting a Malibu style Eaglelite roof up on the 7500 block of Rio Mondego Drive, 95831.

Shake

Heavy Cedar Shakes are being installed on the 500 block of Wexford Court in Rosevill, 95661.

Dimensional Composition Shingle

On the 9000 block of Culumbard Way, 95829 we're installing Owen's Corning Driftwood comp.
We've got Mesquite Owen's Corning going up on the 1700 block of Pluto Way, 95864
Finally we're putting OC Terra Cotta on a house on 45th Street off of Elvas, 95819

Feliz Cinco De Mayo

I wish you all a fun and safe weekend of celebration. We're busy as can be, but I think we'll squeeze some time in for a BBQ or maybe a trip to the river. If I'm going to have anytime at all I better get back to work myself so here's this week's list.

Tile
We've got a couple of tile roofs being installed this week.

First off we have an Eaglelite Ponderosa roof on the 5900 block of Mariners Court in Elk Grove, 95758.
The other tile roof is on the 22oo block of Hillcrest Way in Charmicheal, 95608. They're getting Eaglelite American Heirloom, Cascade Blend. We should start loading their tile on Monday.

Shake

Just one shake roof this week.

We're putting heavy cedar shakes on a house on the 900 block of Lake Front Drive, in the Pocket area, 95831.

Composition
Our comp crews are being kept plenty busy, with four re-roofs going.

First up is a Brown Wood-Owen's Corning roof on the 2900 block of Wiese Way, 95857.
Next we've got Driftwood-Owen's Corning roof on 9000 block of Epernay Court, 95829.
On the 3300 block of M Street we have an Onyx Black Owen's Corning roof, 95816.
And finally another Owen's Corning, this time Estate Grey is being installed on the 5700 block of Gloria Drive, 95822.
